This is a proposal that is being brought forth by the Occupy Strategy Group to be voted upon by the people at the Occupy National Gathering at the GA on Friday August 23rd:
We, the Occupy Strategy Group, are in solidarity with the group Move to Amend and we will join the Move to Amend coalition of groups in solidarity with the effort to amend the Constitution, to firmly establish that money is not speech, and human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights. Additionally, we are in solidarity with other groups and their efforts on the federal, state or local levels of government, to firmly establish that money is not speech, and human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights. We are in solidarity with these groups and their efforts, as we see these efforts as steps toward ending the corporatocracy by limiting the power and legal rights of corporations and affirming the power and legal rights of the human people of the United States of America.
On the 5/27/13 Occupy Strategy Group conference call, a vote was called. Eight out of eight participants voted unanimously in favor of bringing this proposal to the greater Occupy Strategy Group to be voted upon. The participants on the call understood that passage by the greater Occupy Strategy Group would (a) constitute support of this proposal; and (b) also bring this proposal to the Occupy National Gathering to be voted upon by the participants at the Gathering.
Additional background information: Prof. Noam Chomsky has indicated to a member of the Occupy Strategy Group on 5/26/13 that ending the corporatocracy is an “Important goal [that] Seems to me worth a try, but probably with the recognition that even partial success would lay the basis for going on.”
