@OccuEvolve
Occu-Evolve (an independent group within Occupy Wall Street) is working diligently to expand the Occupy Movement through the city of New York. During this initial phase of movement building we are working on helping the local general assemblies adopt safeguards within their assemblies to make sure they function in a open, inviting and transparent way. Community agreements, Mission/Values Statements, Structure and Values Based Consensus are all key ingredients of that, and that's our initial focus as well as doing outreach for different Occupy Town Squares to helping build these GA's.

Stand in Solidarity with Golden Farm Workers! Golden Farm Owner Slaps Boycott Organizers With $3M Lawsuit Charging ‘Abusive’ Demonstrations

Posted September 20th, 2012 by andrea • permalink

Felix Trinidad (c.), a Golden Farm worker who died in July.

It’s getting late for the workers at Golden Farms…we may have another week before this guy ‘Sonny Kim’ begins firing folks…he’s already cut hours. We need to have a presence BOTH Saturday 9/22 and Sunday 9/23.

View the Calendar Event!

Mr. Kim thinks its just ONE group organizing against his abusive labor/economic practices but it’s also Occupy Kensington, Occu-Evolve and hopefully the rest of Occupy Wall Street and our Community Based Movements and Labor!

Kensington greengrocer Sonny Kim says sales down 20% after boycott

The owner of a Kensington greengrocer is fighting back against organizers of a boycott of his store.Golden Farm owner Sonny Kim slapped New York Communities for Change with a $3 million lawsuit, charging store revenues have fallen 20% — and it’s their fault.“Abusive, obstructive and unreasonable demonstration tactics” — like picketing with drums and whistles inside the store — caused the business “severe irreparable harm,” the Brooklyn Supreme Court suit alleges. It’s Kim’s first counter-attack against a boycott that NYCC launched a month ago on behalf of the Church Ave. shop’s workers. The boycott is meant to honor their co-worker Felix Trinidad, who died in July of stomach cancer at age 34.Workers want Kim to give Trinidad’s widow back pay he is owed; he was part of a group of employees who sued the store for back wages. The boycott also aims to get Kim to negotiate a contract with paid sick days.

The suit called NYCC’s demonstrations “malicious” and charged their purpose “is to coerce Golden Farm into making concessions in connection with its ongoing labor disputes with its employees.”By bringing noisy demonstrators into the shop who intimidated customers with “angry and offensive remarks,” NYCC organizers were trespassing on private property, the suit charges. Court documents include links to YouTube videos showing demonstrators marching through store aisles chanting, “Steal those wages Golden Farm” and waving an orange flag with NYCC initials on it.An NYCC official called the lawsuit frivolous and vowed not to be cowed.“The intention is to scare us away — but we won’t be scared,” said NYCC organizing director Jonathan Westin. “We will fight this every step of the way.”

The suit is the latest salvo in a long-running feud between Kim and his employees over pay and working conditions. At the outset of the feud, they were paid $4.86 per hour for 72-hour work weeks.“Instead of spending money for lawyers and this lawsuit, the store owner should have spent the money on repaying the back wages he owes,” said Westin.

Kim’s lawyer didn’t return calls. A store manager refused to speak about the suit.Boycott organizers have an ally in their corner: City Councilman Brad Lander (D- Kensington), who is calling on the store owner to negotiate with workers and give Trinidad’s widow his back pay.“His low-income family has no other source of income; they’re surviving on contributions and donations,” said Lander, a Park Slope resident who sometimes shopped at Golden Farm until the boycott began. “The right thing for Sonny Kim to do is to help them out.”

Stand in Solidarity with Golden Farms Workers – Saturday 9/15 & 9/22

Posted September 14th, 2012 by andrea • permalink

The workers at Golden Farms are calling for solidarity and a continuous boycott of each store based on anti-worker, poor wages, and union activities of its managers and corporate leadership.

The NEXT TWO SATURDAY’S ARE CRUCIAL…WE NEED FOLKS OUT THERE TOMMOROW FRM 12-4!

The day-shift employees at Golden Farm say that the first week of boycotting the store was a huge success. They report that on Saturday, the first day of the boycott, sales dropped by almost half. On Sunday, sales dropped by almost 75%.

Last Friday night, the night before the boycott began, store owner Sonny Kim cut work hours from some employees’ schedules–the employees who have been active in the campaign for back wages and unionization. Mr. Kim hasn’t returned the hours to them. During the past week, those employees worked 12 to 18 hours less than they normally do.

The workers have called for more picketing outside of Golden Farm. In addition to picketing on Saturdays and Sundays (10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.), supporters are being asked to picket Mondays through Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., the store’s busiest weekday hours.

329 Church Avenue, at the corner of E. 4th Street
