The International Week of Solidarity with the NATO 5 was a smashing success thanks to the love and solidarity people across the country showed for our imprisoned comrades! Here in Chicago, we had a number of awesome events that brought folks together for good times and fierce commitment to defending the NATO 3 as their trial approaches this Fall.

We also raised more money for the NATO 3 legal defense. With everyone’s support over this last year, we’ve been able to raise nearly half of our $30k goal for legal defense costs. Thank you! As trial approaches, however, investigative and trial prep costs are starting to mount, so we urgently need to raise about $18k! Please help us keep spreading the word about this case and sending donations to us online via WePay (https://www.wepay.com/donations/nato-5-defense) or by sending a check or money order with “8th Day Center/Nato 5 Defense Fund” in the memo line to:

8th Day Center for Justice
205 W. Monroe St. Suite 500
Chicago, IL 60606

To finish off the week, we’re having a noise demo to let the defendants hear the strength of our solidarity!

NOISE DEMO—Cook County Jail
Saturday, 5/25, 5pm
Meet at the fountain near 26th St. & California. Bring noise makers, musical instruments, and banners! Voice your solidarity with the 10,000 held captive in CCJ!
www.facebook.com/events/590463474311636

Comrades across the country have been sharing their stories, pictures, and videos of their solidarity events with us, so here are some we’d like to share with you! https://nato5support.wordpress.com/international-week-of-solidarity-with-the-nato-5/

It’s not too late to send us your stories and photos, so please email them to nato5solidarity(A)gmail.com. You can also write to the defendants to let them know how your events went, as well as send them books to help them survive life inside. Their addresses are on our Contact page (https://nato5support.wordpress.com/contact/).

THE MURRAY’S ARE NOT GIVING IN

AFTER THE MURRAYS HAVE BEEN EVICTED,
AFTER FAITHFULLY PAYING $42,726 IN ESCROW PAYMENTS,
BANK OF AMERICA HAS STOLEN THEIR HOME, REFUSING TO GRANT THEM THE MODIFICATION AND TAKING THEIR HOUSE

At 3pm on Friday May 24th, the Murrays will be joined Majyck radio, Occupy Kalamazoo, and others to demand this illegitimate action is overturned. Matthew and Beverly Murray found themselves the victim of an illegitimate eviction on Tuesday May 14th. The Murrays were kicked out of there home faced with arrest only to watch their locks get changed, and told they would face arrest if they tried to go back into their home.

This eviction speaks to a larger problem in this country as in 2012, an additional 1.3 million families lost their home. In Kalamazoo in 2012 there was a 92% rise in homeless children alone.

The Murray eviction is a clear example of modern American housing, and the growing gap between the upper and lower class, with the middle class slowly yielding to extinction.

Earlier this month Eric T. Schneiderman, New York’s attorney general and top prosecutor, said that the lenders violated the terms of the National Mortgage Settlement, a sweeping $26 billion pact brokered last year between five of the nation’s biggest banks and 49 state attorneys general. The agreement came during a national outcry over potentially widespread foreclosure abuses like shoddy paperwork, erroneous fees and wrongful evictions.

Mr. Schneiderman says that Bank of America did not follow guidelines dictating how the banks field and process requests from homeowners trying to modify their mortgages.

“Bank of America flagrantly violated obligations, putting hundreds of homeowners across New York at greater risk of foreclosure,” Mr. Schneiderman said. Since October 2012, Mr. Schneiderman’s office has documented 129 separate violations involving Bank of America.

Since December 2010, the Murray’s have paid $42,726 in escrow by way of a hugely over-inflated payment. They had a professional appraisal done on their property and made two offers to Bank of America, at or above the appraised value. BoA ignored them. Then, prompted by a third party observer, BoA reached out to the Murrays expressing their desire
to explore a modification resolution. Shortly after the Murray’s called to follow up, they received a letter stating they could do nothing because they were in litigation. The Bank was very much aware of this when they contacted the Murrays initially. The Murrays wrote a letter to the CEO and President for Bank Of America, Brian Moynihan sharing their dilemma and asking for help. Several days later, they received word that their attorney had filed for immediate eviction.

When the eviction happened two deputies, detective and 3 men from Safeguard Properties Inc showed up at the Murrays’ door and told them if they didn’t leave, they would be arrested. The Murrays were there with two of their friends from Occupy Kalamazoo.

Rather than risk more serious charges, Matthew asked if they could gather a few things such as clothes and medicine, as well as some of their more precious belongings. They carried as much out of the house as they could, until the Sheriff demanded they leave so Safeguard Properties Inc could change the locks.

Bank of America received 7 billion dollars in federal funding to carry out modifications to “help” borrowers, yet has never even attempted to work out anything with the Murrays despite the Murrays numerous requests for a modification, and despite
promises in writing from BoA to do so. They know these “promises” can’t be upheld in court. So they make them with no intention of keeping. One source from Safeguard Properties, the company overseeing the eviction, inadvertently told the Murrays that
this company owns Bank Of America’s servicing division. This is a mind-boggling conflict of interest. This essentially means that BoA has a vested interest in evicting families in order to fraudulently steal these homes through cooperation with Safeguard
Properties Inc.

PLEASE HELP THE MURRAYS FIGHT FOR THEIR HOME!

Also call Brian Moynihan -Office of the President and CEO: 704-386-5687

Demand they stop their corrupt practices and return the Murrays to their

You may also email Bank of America President Brian T. Moynihan at:

Brian.t.moynihan@bankofamerica.com or fax them at: 1-866-603-4755

The banks expect the hoopla to die down after the eviction. It usually

does because people lose interest! But if we’re to STOP the victimization

of borrowers by Bank Of America, we must continue to make our voices

heard LOUDER after the eviction than before, until justice is served.

You can help the Murray’s by calling Daniel Vargas, Executive Customer Relations

Important Links:

Other helpful links for victims:

**Drive only if necessary and avoid flooded roads and washed out bridges. Stay off the streets. If you must go out watch for fallen objects; downed electrical wires; and weakened walls, bridges, roads, and sidewalks. Keep away from loose or dangling power lines and report them immediately to the power company.

**Walk carefully around the outside your home and check for loose power lines, gas leaks and structural damage before entering.

**Stay out of any building if you smell gas, floodwaters remain around the building or your home was damaged by fire and the authorities have not declared it safe.

**Inspect your home for damage. Take pictures of damage, both of the building and its contents, for insurance purposes. If you have any doubts aboutsafety, have your residence inspected by a qualified building inspector or structural engineer before entering.

**Use battery-powered flashlights in the dark. Do NOT use candles. Note: The flashlight should be turned on outside before entering – the battery may produce a spark that could ignite leaking gas, if present.

**Watch your pets closely and keep them under your direct control. Watch out for wild animals, especially poisonous snakes. Use a stick to poke through debris.

**Avoid drinking or preparing food with tap water until you are sure it’s not contaminated.

**Check refrigerated food for spoilage. If in doubt, throw it out.

**Wear protective clothing and be cautious when cleaning up to avoid injury.

**Use the telephone only for emergency calls.

**NEVER use a generator inside homes, garages, crawlspaces, sheds, or similar areas, even when using fans or opening doors and windows for ventilation. Deadly levels of carbon monoxide can quickly build up in these areas and can linger for hours, even after the generator has shut off.

Steve and Dave’s May 2013 self-released album ‘Zuccotti Confidential’ is an Occupy Wall Street song cycle of expertly crafted pop songs in the vein of the Beach Boys, if the Beach Boys had been pepper sprayed and robbed of their first amendment rights, then wrote an album about it. The 10-song album conjures specific people, incidents, and themes associated with Occupy Wall Street and defies the popular notion that no original music emerged from the movement.

“Plenty of music was created for Occupy,” notes Stephen C. Baldwin (vocals, guitar, production), and David Intrator (sax). “But the music that was played in Zuccotti, on marches, behind the barricades – the music that was from Occupy was never recorded, except in field recordings. This is the music that we’ve tried to include on this album.”

“The music didn’t stop when the encampment was shut down,” says David Intrator. “Although the November crackdown stopped the drummers—who provided the rhythm track for life at the park—the music itself was unstoppable. Musicians forbidden to use drums picked up guitars. Songs were invented to deal with the great trauma of losing Zuccotti Park and to create community in our wandering diaspora.”

Many of the themes in Zuccotti Confidential come from these days of wandering, loss, and bewilderment. They heartbreak can be heard in such songs as “M-17,” about the momentous final battle by Occupiers to re-inhabit Zuccotti, or “99 Miles” about the grueling 99-Mile March that took guitar-playing activists on a foot march from Philadelphia to Zuccotti along the highways and swamps of New Jersey in July 2011.

“It was important for me to write about some of the people who were heroes—and anti-heroes—to those of us in the Park,” says Baldwin. “People like ‘The Man in the Box,’ who I think of as the Warhol of cardboard, and The Knitting Ladies, who were characters right out of A Tale of Two Cities. And I wanted to write at least one song that mentioned Officer Winski,” says Baldwin, who ended up writing two songs (“The Man in the Box” and “Back in Zuccotti Again) featuring the NYPD officer, whose presence loomed large for Occupiers throughout 2011 and 2012. “I happened to see Officer Winski last week in Washington Square Park but he didn’t even remember me. Maybe that’s a good thing,” said Baldwin.

Zuccotti Confidential would never have come about without the contributions of David Peel, who, along with Baldwin, Intrator, and a core group of about 20 other musicians, formed what Baldwin calls the “OZM,” (Original Zuccotti Musicians). “Peel called me earlier this year and yelled at me for letting all of these songs rot away on paper,” says Baldwin. “He got me off my ass and into my kitchen, which is where I recorded everything except Dave’s saxophone solos, which he remotely recorded and e-mailed to me.” Album production was finalized using an ancient copy of Cubase running on a half-dead XP notebook.

Musical influences on the album include Lou Reed, Nick Lowe, The Beach Boys, Serge Gainsbourg, Lester Young, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, and Bertold Brecht. “The music is probably not in the style that many people will likely associate with Occupy. But this is the music that we heard from inside the movement , from inside the Freedom Cage, along the side of the road, and around the camps as the lights grew dim and hope seemed to vanish from the world. It was this music that kept us going forward.”

The 14th of May will probably be remembered as the day that a pig was slaughtered in front of the Parliament building in Kenya. Civil society activists – led by Boniface Mwangi – held a demonstration dubbed OCCUPY PARLIAMENT, in protestation of Members of Parliament. In what is deemed a greedy act, Parliamentarians are demanding an unreasonable, unconstitutional amount as perks for holding office. Kenyan MPs are among the highest paid in the world.

The blood spilled as the pig was let loose and smeared a few of them. One police was infuriated to have gotten blood spattered all over his uniform. He was the one in charge of the operation and this must have dented his figure of authority, as most of his juniors had unstained pants and polished boots.

The police lost their nerve after 2 hours of militant chants, activist songs and civil disobedience slogans like “the police are same ol’ same old since colonization,” “Thieves and MPigs,” “We won’t stop!” As all this was happening, volunteer working groups like Occupy Avante Garde and Inuka Trust blockaded traffic for motorists to sign a petition.

The protest reached a frenzy when the famous twin canon trucks named as “jeha” and “nam” (a split swahili word meaning ‘limbo’) pulled closer to the mob of irate activists. The activists, rather than cowering, called on the trucks to bring it on: chanting “we want more water.” When the water canons sprayed, some brave protesters stood firm with arms interlocked in solidarity. They could have maintained their position had it not been for the foot soldiers who were armed with clubs and tear gas canisters; soldiers descended on the activists in a most ferocious manner. The police, having dispersed the outer core of protesters with bullets shot in the air, swooped in and arrested the remaining protesters who were subdued by smoke and baton battery. The organiser, Boniface Mwangi, was among the arrested. They were taken to Nairobi Police Headquarters, which is opposite the Parliament building. They spent the night and will be arraigned in court today.

Occupy Parliament got media accolades as it aired on all television channels. It also set the agenda for more action to be taken; an example is a proposal to reduce the number of Parliamentarians. The Occupy action was the talk of a local FM station all morning. The social media will be full of images and comments throughout today and will be trending.
