Global Change - Week of Global communication, strike, celebrationsNational Change - convergences of civil rights, peace, and environmental groups to collaborate upcoming national events
Local Change - National Gathering can change our city
Personal Change- we want to emphasis communication, art, and Education on how to organize in your own community, basics of alt energy, Co-Op modeling, and Rights trainings. as well as offer documentaries and panels.
We feel Kalamazoo has the potential to be an incredible place for National Gathering because of the specific size, environment, and current events that offer some amazing possibilities. We are organizing a global collaborated effort. Having National Gathering here with a enough people would change our city. With the support of National Gathering.
Kalamazoo and our state of michigan have some amazing Challenges we are the 6th meanest city in the Nation to the homeless and recently had yet another homeless person freeze to death unnamed and unreported. 11% of our middle school has access to heroin. We also have Big Oil and Gas coming through with a Pipeline that rivals Keystone in size. Our State of Michigan is at the hands of corporate government. government push through an astounding 96% of legislation in illegal procedure. Gas Fracking , corruption, and environmental exploitation thrive here as we frack,and dig for tar sand pipeline’s and poison 20% of the entire world's fresh water supply. Gun shootings go unreported, and criminalisation is passively allowed. We need help here. . We are small enough that having 1000’s of people here could change our community.

This Week’s Occupy National Gathering 2013 Calls and Global Meetings
Posted March 25th, 2013 by jackiews • permalink
This Week’s Occupy National Gathering 2013 Calls and Global Meetings
The Occupy National Gathering 2013 had it’s launch call last Wed., March 20 and was well attended. We have over 30 people on our InterOccupy Maestro Call and 6 people in our new mumble room. (occupycoordintion.com, Natgat2). We had people from Spain, Montreal, Nova Scotia as well as various states in the mumble room.
David Cobb presented on the call and will be bottomlining the Corporate Personhood portion of the Convergence on Economic Injustice. Besides our five convergence areas, we are also focusing on Global Conversation and Solidarity and the Summer Tour, which will be a moving concert, teach-ins, community gatherings and conversations.
On Friday, March 22, we joined the Via22 international mumble meeting, where we presented about NatGat and asked those present to join us in continuing the global conversation, and build up to NatGat2. All present agreed to Plant a Seed on Earth Day to symbolize real local growth and the growing global community. The attendees will take the proposal back to their assemblies to discuss further evetns and actions.
On Sunday, a planning group member attended the World Human Tide global mumble meeting which was held in French and Spanish, and had over 30 people in attendance from Europe, Mexico and South America. With help from an online translate program, the lone American was able to copy and paste the written texts and keep up with the basic conversation. A member from Spain was kind enough to translate to English when an important issue or vote was up. The World Human Tide is an emerging group, much like Via 22 and NatGat2, interested in supporting local actions and discussing furthering the global implications of all our struggles, and continuing the global conversation and solidarity for each other.

Notes =
Attending the meeting are Carminda, François, Jackie, Nicole, Patrick, Ternura, Alex, Chris, Daniel, Dennis, Mar
Jackie presents the NatGat of last year. Visioning documents available from the 290 people there. This year Kalamazoo is a good place to converge. Biggest inland oil spill in America. Very aware of the environment. Human powered bycicle generators, teach how to do that. Big homeless problem for a small town. City mean to homeless people.
5 basic ideas to concentrate on : ENVIRONMENT, drop fossil fuels, how environmental problems connect internationaly. Have conversations locally and expand them. ECONOMICS, corporate personhood : in America you can spend whatever you want for elections. ANTI-WAR coalitions, peace groups, supporting FREE MEDIA and better ways to connect. A new platform in the works, a new great way for us to connect. KALAMAZOO
In Spain, similar problems with fracking, no need to emphasize the choice of Kalamazoo within the USA at the international level for outreach
Nicole (bottom lining environmental aspect). please email me to organize, would love to work with you! nicki8586@gmail.com
Proposal in solidarity with VIA22 : Earth Day – Plant something day (a real plant, and the seed of conversation)
NatGat would like to participate also to Global May
http://occupynationalgathering.net/global-conversation
Tour of the group Unfuck the world (USA), pot-lucks, teach-ins, hopefully people will decide to meet in Kalamazoo. Similar initiative in Spain starting May 1st.
InterOccupy is supporting the National Gathering 2013. http://interoccupy.net/natgat2/2013/03/keep-up-with-natgat2013-organizing-efforts-with-e-mail-lists/ Subscribe here: https://lists.mayfirst.org/mailman/listinfo/ng-2013-global-conv
Nicole : Environment aspect : solidarity with tar sand struggles
No prerequisites to participate in the NatGat process
New visioning process to participate online, it’s still in the conceptual phase
Nat Gat : August 21-25.
Proposal to make it a 24 hour event on the 22nd of August, so that Australia can participate
Last year, it was only Occupy. Now a year later, it opens up to other efforts. Talked about calling it International Occupy. Open to input and suggestions on that.
In France, they call themselves Real Democracy. It’s very specific to the people to whom you adress the message. Maybe National in each country and then connect internationally.
Car : VIA22 had the same aim at the beginning. Open to other movements, a fresh start. Feel free to use VIA22 name for the international communication. (Proposal)
Alex : as long as goals are intertwined, it’s okay
Daniel introduces himself.
Use Via22 name for international communication, to say that natgat is a US initiative,one of the initiatives coming together in the process and communication space for via22 – bring this to the natgat planning group! (via22 is also “a learning process”, not something we can do in a day or a couple days and everyone is happy, it’s an ongoing process) Via22 will support the global dialog, but don’t need to change natgat name to via22, would kill efforts especially after August.
Ternura: Not change NatGat2 name for VIA22. After August, VIA22 will still be on, it is never over. Promote the global dialogue the same way that we promote VIA22. Happy that NatGat will turn into a process.
WSF –
Carminda will let us know about the free spaces in Tunis
Ternura – different movements meet in tunis – want to show a new way that movements and individuals are connecting. (pad just disconnected for me)
for a lot of people it is impossible to connect to these types of platforms http://peoplesassemblies.org/panforum like we have on mumble, skype, etc.
Alex – it is really a challenge for other people and organziations that want to connect
connecting here has been a hassle – thanks, – in the WSF if people could be educated on how to connect globally – if you have know-how and time to teach other orgazniations to do this it would be nice
is ternura going to be in Tunis? T – will be more effective on this end – she will be dialing between tunis and europe
Car – Via22 will be bringing – activist researchers are thinking critically about all this – we will be proposing 4 spaces.
1 – encourage dialogue between ppl in diff social movement and to have an opening to come and meet – there is a gap between generations, old left, and new. participarory methodology – open form and world ___ – will be breaking down into small groups to have conversationa about 3 main goals.
2networking, dialogue
not really oproposing Via22 as the thing to do, but as a platform
3.convergence after the meeting in Tunis – all open for participation – will be using mumble and skype and livestream
4.creative part – sometimes speaking is not best way to express selves
T_indignadx: all the info to follow and connect to our comrades in Tunis http://titanpad.com/GlobalSquaresinTunisinfo
Francois – intends to be online on the 27th – do you have any information about that – ]
car – acutally noone really knows how it will be
you can join through mumble and actuqally will have mumble at some tables so you can participate
Dennis – Amsterdam – been keeping an eye on the WSF and your visit to Tunisia – I saw that Orsan had sent around an email
Carminda will post about livestream, look on the site for this info – today or tmrw
www.via22.org
Alex – will there be a participation in a march in Tunis
Car – there will be a march on the 26th; also a march at the ending of the forum, but that is more focused on supporting Palestine.
T – any secial requests for the social forum in Tunis; bring souvenirs int he form of networks!
especially from the middle east and Africa, Asia
Pat – will try to be there ….
Carmind to Pat – talked about the need for networking there – can you tell more about tht
Pat – many coming to the forum are already involved with networks – people like to paricupate globally but not all have same energy, capibilities – if there can be a map of everyone’s interest (lit, food, energy) – could see on the map where you want to participate
there is a lot of ways and ends to do what we like to make civil change – the object of the forum is to connect people – if we can do something online or there – to be as visible as possible – someone did this before, made a big map attched between two trees – it was super big (2.5×5 metres long) was beautiful (important when we do things) – a place to write names and subjects (communcation, global vision, empowerment, etc.), cord
a measure problem about how people write – with a pen – need to send out emails to each of them to be sure you them right – if people can enter on a laptop, it would be better
create a simple form for people to fill in online
Connect with Dave and Larry from IO – presenting about itnernational communications platform, InterOccupy tools, process, methodology
Francois – there is a meeting on Sunday to test the connection with Tunis
Pat – it is not possible to test ahead – it may be very busy during Tunis; maybe we buy a sim card or something with internet possiblities and try to conenct a laptop with the mobile phone – think a SIM card may be enought to connect to mumble. It will be so sad if we have the connection and it is bad, bad sound, etc.
Francois – will be a test for the four mumble rooms we use use in Tunis
Sunday between 8PM and 10PM Tunis time – calculate what it is in your area
Car – will try to be there – we have a meeting with the people going from Quebec
Pat – anything prepared for taking video and pictures of the workshop
Car – has a small camera – we hope for more
Pat – maybe we can try to produce some bottom, like a picture you can pin with Via22 on it – a badge – then it is a souvenir and collect later. spreading the name of via22.
contact ___ from occupy – he was talking about doing this, getting a machine
Car – we are leaving tomorrow afternoon.
Earth Day
touched this point when we were speaking about Kalamazoo – the beginning of the global conversation – like the idea of planting a seed
Francois – what is happening in Montreal – a big assembly last year this year on the 21st Ternura -putting together assemblies Greenpeace, other big groups
the town I ive in, fracking threat this year – we have a platform that coordinates a lot of the groups, grassroots, ngos – the subject here is fracking and there are many actions – full of actions the whole weekend. many ngos don’t see themselves participating online to connect to other ecological groups
april 26 we will do something like an ___ space with people so they
the whole month is going to be anti- fracking in my town
Nicole – put her contact information in the pad – let her know whatever we can do to promote and be in soloidarity with those actions – awesome
Car – we should be in touch about that – there is a via11meeting – there should be more meetings about that, develop a poster, talk more about the events of Earth Day
welcome to sacajaweabcn
meeting on the 11th is at 4 PM GMT
Global May 2013
Den – Amsterdam – not sure what is happening, but something is being cooked up – big demostration adn open assembly last year
Car – Montreal – last year the global May was part of Quebec Spring – we built up a collective, a group who worked nicely and smoothly – proposed to open the space we occupied in 2011 and propose it as a space to converge – make their own activities within the square – worked out very well – people had 20-25 activities. there were a lot of people in the streets around the city.
question – laptop – assembly in or windows or mac? or linux ![]()
Mar from Barcelona has joined.
T – online forum – please post what you are doing for global may
Jackie – In New York, big march last year blending workers and students, immigrants, in the works again this year; Occupy Debt initiative buy loans pennies on the dollar : many millions of debt in medical bills have been cleared. Some objections to even partaking in the Debt System, but mostly favorable. Strike Debt: http://strikedebt.org/, https://www.facebook.com/pages/Strike-Debt/244850825627699?id=244850825627699&sk=info
To understand more of this initiative, you can download the
The Debt Resistors’ Operations Manual at http://strikedebt.org/
Occupy London also has a helpful treatise on Economics: http://issuu.com/occupylondon/docs/occupy_little_book_of_ideas/1
first of May until the 22nd of May – send qestions to the Via22 mailing list and Ternura can help you with that.
Den – globalmay.org still on the server – if we need to get something set up!
Car – we will need to host map there.
Den – will we use the map global democacie has or would we have to start again
Car – we would have to start pinning form zero
http://www.globalmay.org/when-where.html
Ternura – remind everyone that I will post link to the pad again – if your interventions are not there are not recorded right this is your chance to record them
Nicole – thank you very much for having us here – Chris wants me to tell you thank you for having us here, and definitely want to network with everyone about the envronment and everything
Car – thank you – not easy to dialgue internationally
Ternura – just want to let everyone know
Car – we need some help to promote the spaces in Tunis – today I will be putting info on the website, and if you have time to share the facebook events, etc. give us a hand
encourage everyone to come back to this conversation – hopefully we will have more people as we go
T – there are meetings on this server all week – mondays to thursday(?) – see you on April 11 and before that we will meet in this server
For April plans, the earth day we agreed on meeting on 11th Apr, at 16pm GMT to plan the 22nd
Don’t forget the part where we plant a tree representing a projetc for the future
please if you feel like, share your plans for GlobalMay in this form : http://goo.gl/K65L8 so other assemblies can start form there
Buffalo in May 2013 about the strike debt group in May 2013 there will be a “debt burning” day
In NY unions wil join on MayDay
any more questions or suggestions for GlobalMay2013 pelase launch the contenst to the via22 mailing list and we will be happy to answer and help

Welcome! This is the collective writing space that we will be using in preparation for the March 22nd conversation. Introductions
François Genest, Montreal, participations in Occupy, Autonomous Neighbourhood Assemblies, VIA22 process; can translate both ways between English and French; active since 2011; low level of energy, optimistic outlook.
Jackie Splain, rural farm/dairy hill country outside Buffalo, NY. Never an activist before, I had given up hope in all our systems, and thought I would ignore it and happily garden in my time left. After seeing the kids in NYC, OWS grabbed my heart, and I found Occupy Buffalo, then InterOccupy (perfect for people far away from other activists, but with a computer!), helped with Occupy Sandy, and now the NGWG and more and more international mumbles.
Had one year each French, Spanish, so can pick out a few words in print; several years German, so can pick out a few more
love language. love people. so happy to be here!

Activities linked to VIA22 (through participants)
World Social Forum 2013 (Tunis) : Several participants in the VIA22 process are actively involved in the preparation of workshops for global convergence in Tunis during the Forum. Mumble chats and livestreams are in the works and will allow a limited but invaluable two-way communication with the world outside the forum proper.

Initiatives that are both local and global (and thus interesting from the VIA22 point of view!)
An omage to Hugo Chavez from Venezuela should be made as he gave Venezuelans what Occupy wants to give the world. Long live Chavez. ¡Chavez Vive La Lucha Sigue! It’s best if there is already an initiative coming from a local network. Are there any from Venezuela or a South American country?

Proposal for the flow of conversation on the 22nd of March
Remembering that the NatGat initiative was an important point of discussion during the VIA11-03-13 conversation (see http://piratepad.net/via11-03-13 ) and that the WSF in Tunis was an important point of discussion at the Februray 11 conversation (I lost the link to the pad),
I propose that the more structured part of the conversation start with a presentation of the NatGat initiative from participants who are the most knowledgeable about it (see the pad created by Jackie for the March 20 call : http://piratepad.net/NatGat2Kzoo, followed by a presentation of the VIA22 activities in Tunis (March 27, 16:00 Tunis/11:00 Eastern; March 28, 13:00 Tunis/ 08:00 Eastern; March 29, 13:00 Tunis/ 08:00 Eastern). And before the conversation becomes unstructured again, it could focus on short presentations of local initiatives by participants.
Sounds good. I’ll put some info here to help streamline the conversation. Chris will have 20 mins, but I will be here the whole time.
Very happy to have an omage to Chavez, and to hear all the plans for WSF – we have two IO compadres going as well.
Francois, I like this line:
Initiatives that are both local and global (and thus interesting from the VIA22 point of view!)
and that is exactly what the national gathering focus will be, or hope to be, local in communities and global in solidarity and networks.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Notes:
Environmental outreach – Nicole – our main goal is to determine how we can work together and empower eachother to fight environmental issues and move away from fossil fuels, even if we use different tactics. Teamwork is the goal!
Economic and trade justice – David Cobb
Corporate personhood –
Ending war – Chris – several peace groups in Michigan and abroad. Want to see how we can come together and stop the war machine. How can we make sense of the craziness and put an end to war, soldier suicides. How can we the people address this together, make solutions.
Making and supporting free and unfettered media – Calling out to alternative media and see how we can come together and address these issues.
Tracie- worked with first natgat. Veterans for Peace. If there’s a story people want to tell, maybe we can highlight those people and bring them to natgat to tell their stories.
Lynn – been getting people organized to send out petitions to churches. Having people volunteer as opposed to paying people, need to get that kind of concept out there.
If you want to be a part of any particular convergence group, put up a 2!
Why Kalamazoo? – Chris – A conversation started in November about whether or not there would be another natgat. Even though Kzoo is not a large city, environmental issues (the oil spill) and other local issues creates an opportunity to change the city. They spent time reaching out to see if any other cities wanted to do the national gathering, spoke to the first working group and wanted to make sure there was consensus and “had their blessing”. Kzoo is also the 6th meanest city to the homeless in the U.S.
Mouse – in 2009, Kzoo was labeled the 6th meanest city against the homeless in the nation. The homeless coalition across the country did a study that showed laws criminalizing the homeless, making it illegal to eat, sleep, in the public. 9/10 businesses will call the police for trespassing if a homeless person so much as uses their bathroom.
Chris – Mouse has been leading a charge to put forward a homeless bill of rights similar to ones passed in California and Rhode Island. Thank you Mouse!
Tammy – supports what Mouse and what occupy is doing to the homeless. Also happening in Kzoo: drones will be launched in Fort Custer, another good reason for natgat to be in kzoo.
Chris – definitely
Phil – a carpenter. Been with occupy since October 2011. We need to create more of a web presence. We have websites, but don’t seem to have the kind of presence we need online. Also a web administrator. Need to be able to show people where to go and where they can find info online. Does anyone have ideas on how to move forward with this? Also, we need people who can create sites that would be of interest to people in the occupy movement.
Chris – Phil has been helping with a lot of webhosting, want to give him a shoutout!
Karen – apologize for negativity in introduction, drones in Seattle, lost the vote yesterday. Wanted to mention Detroit, city council and the mayor have no power because of takeover. She is also an attorney, wants light to be shined on this kind of legislation.
Chris – RTW in WI, MI, thanks to Karen for speaking to this.
Rick – working with local churches in kzoo.
Chris – oldest standing church in Kzoo might let OK and other groups take space in their building. Will be working on housing, education, family shelter. City gave 25,000 out of 140,000,000 budget to help homeless, 92% increase in number of homeless children in Kzoo. Want to talk about how to use a tree to charge a cell phone, use a wind up.
Mouse – 16% of Kzoo population is below the poverty guideline, and 10% of the 16% are families with children
Global conversation – Jackie – Mumble meeting on Friday at 12pm EST with via22. Will be talking about Earth Day. We will literally plant a seed (of change) and have a conversation about making changes in our communities. These are local conversations, but this is also a global event.
Chris – Tim DeChristopher will be getting out of jail on April 21! Calling for people to watch the documentary (Bidder 70) on his action. He is also willing to skype with people, so if anyone wants to make that a part of their Earth Day event, that’s an option!
Jarah: Coordinating with occupy global media, trying to get figures from revolutions around the world to speak at natgat. Someone from Egypt, Radio Free Syria, someone from Greece who works with anonymous. Also have global occupy media putting together an international paper they’ve been promoting on conference calls.
Karen – a bill introduced in congress last Thursday that will come up for vote this week. This says that congress can approve the Keystone XL pipeline without the president’s approval. It is expected that this bill will pass.
Cal – link to the hub is on the participant dashboard! http://interoccupy.net/natgat2/
Lisa – get together a forum, petition, event, to have people call senators and say something (direct response to Karen)
John – China owns 80% of tar sands from Canada.
Fred – 350.org, Sierra Club are working on this issue. Will email natgat list a website where we can enter our zip codes and get numbers for our senators.
Occupy Summer Tour of Change – Lisa – Will be kicking off on July 8 with Unfuck The World. Great opportunity for people to network, music, learn how to work together. London, Brisbane, LA, will be streaming live. Worldwide solidarity. Spoke with Maike from LA today, couldn’t make the call but Lisa passing along info from her. Working on a traveling carnival of activists working with occupy and non-occupy groups. Strike debt concerts, donation drives (Occupy Sandy). Towns that they will be traveling to with Guitarmy, bike tour, caravan. Different time frames for each, people can determine what works for them. Lisa is in NY right now working with Occupy Sandy, hurricane relief effort. Will be back home in mid-April. Very important to keep supporting the effort, especially with spring coming and mold being a huge problem. Can be deadly. Anyone who wants to help, please do!
Chris – will be building forms/registration to assist with different aspects of travel. Want to highlight the tour as a potential travel option. People will literally begin walking to Kzoo from some places, there will be supply drives for Sandy. Walking tour, bike tour, caravan
Lisa – mega bus…option?
Chris – might be on there by mistake. They were supportive with caravan effort in DC last year, probably not supposed to be on facebook page now.
Jackie – wanted to respond about the caravan. might want to encourage people to start organizing locally. Last year, New England leg started applying for grants. Have to get going early.
Chris – was on tour before, definitely encourages as much organization as possible
Carrie and Dan – been wanting to talk about the website at articlev.org
Would be fantastic to provide everyone with a clone/copy of what they are doing in terms of a website. phil has server space available. Could really help with natgat.
Chris – Dan, definitely encourage you to share this!
Cal – will be launching a large scale visioning process. Will likely put all technical tools that IO and others are working on to the test.
Planning for Global Conversation and Convergence in solidarity with the Occupy National Gathering in Kalamazoo, Michigan, 21-25 August 2013
Below is a post to share with a lot of information. I am not sure of the mumble configuration – it is the occupycoordination server, and NatGat2 room (or channel?).
We will also be joining the Via22 mumble on Friday, March 22 @ Noon ET, 4 PM GMT
Join us Wednesday night at 8 PM ET to continue to plan and develop the National Gathering this year. http://interoccupy.net/blog/ai1ec_event/national-gathering-launch-call-2/?instance_id=3546774
We will be forming working groups and ask for your input and your help moving forward. We wish to include grass roots, alternative medias , rights, advocacy, unions, artists, and more to make this a gathering for all who wish to make a better tomorrow.
This year the national Gathering is hyper-local and global in focus. We envision days of concerted worldwide actions focused on very local issues that expose those local issues as part of the worldwide fight against systemic injustice. We will be in solidarity with Via 22 actions each month beginning with Earth Day April 21-22. We will gather and share this worldwide action through all the media tools and networks we continue to build through voluntary people power.
We already have networks on board with these broad areas of interest and welcome and need your suggestions, participation and contributions:.
1. Fixing Fossil Fuels and Creating an Environmentally Sustainable Future.
2. Economic and Trade Justice, Equal Access and Ending Corporate “Personhood”, Asserting the People’s Sovereignty.
3. Making and Supporting Free, Unfettered Media.
4. Ending War and Our Police State, Building Peace and Cooperation.
5. Renew Kalamazoo and your community. Homeless Bill of Rights.
What issues effect your local community and the worldwide community? Network solidarity events locally, regionally, nationally, globally. Together, A Better World Is Possible!
Prior to the talk, François wrote this:
As part of my preparation for this conversation, I crated this workspace and humbly submit it to the other participants as a extension to the conversation and as a way to keep a record of links and important points to remember. It is my experience that proposing an agenda beforehand introduces a huge bias in the conversation and I would like to keep as much room as possible for free conversation during the talk. Therefore, I will put in writing what I think is important for me (I point out and ackowledge the local and personal bias of my perspective) to remember from previous conversations. Going backwards, here are the links to the previous conversations and work that has been done under the name of the VIA22 collaborative process :
VIA22F conversation : http://piratepad.net/VIA22F
(chosen exerps)
inspired by the student protest movement in Quebec in the Spring of 2012 – called for national actions on the 22 of each month- the beauty was no need to decide on a date – everyone knew – many spontanteous actions, big demonstrations; people from many groups – Mexico – that is the origin of the V process – no set a priori definition
the intent is to help people communciate and to share their different struggles
historically we did an open forum on Oct. 22, as the temps dropped we concentrated on building this global conversation since the fall. the intent is really to help sharing tactics with emphasis on creativity – encouraged
ongoing and coming global conversations/event
Cartographers of the Future – we had our first meeting about 20 days ago – around 60 people here form 22 countries contact Geraldo adri.geraldo@gmail.com skype:gerald161
Convergence of movements at the World Social Forum – contact Carminda via22global@gmail.com
Global Squares initiative http://www.global-square.net/
Earthday event april 22nd, and continuing toward national convergences – april 22 – plant an actual seed in the ground to renew the earth
seed of communciation – allow people in small communities to come together to have a dinner, music, festive atmosphere and then have a conversation
environment human rights social justice and how we can take steps to make countries more reflective to its people – what we hope is begin this convo on Earth Day and then moving to state communciations and then all the way until August leading to a national and global conversation with us in different areas doing this together and then using our technology to communciate with each other. the people are the glue, more than the technology contact Chris Whammy737@gmail.com
directory.occupy.net – we list every physical occupation that exists – more and more we should include groups, not just -physical places
anyone can add data – some of the data is outdated – creative ways to
start to tag things: enviromental, justice, social justice, food justice
hope to make the editing portion easier – contact Thiago thiago@madeofpeople.org
Join us Wednesday night at 8 PM ET to continue to plan and develop the National Gathering this year.
We will be forming working groups and ask for your input and your help moving forward. We wish to include grass roots, alternative medias , rights, advocacy, unions, artists, and more to make this a gathering for all who wish to make a better tomorrow.
We already have networks on board with these broad areas of interest and welcome and need your suggestions, participation and contributions:.
1. Fixing Fossil Fuels and Creating an Environmentally Sustainable Future.
2. Economic and Trade Justice, Equal Access and Ending Corporate “Personhood”, Asserting the People’s Sovereignty.
3. Making and Supporting Free, Unfettered Media.
4. Ending War and Our Police State, Building Peace and Cooperation.
5. Renew Kalamazoo and your community. Homeless Bill of Rights.
We also encourage the creation of local, national and global processes to communicate, organize and converge. We are meeting more and more on the internet, on mumble, on conference calls. Global infrastructures are appearing, to bring more people together and able to participate worldwide. We are able as a people to organize worldwide protests and actions. We envision a day of concerted worldwide actions focused on very local issues that expose those local issues as part of the worldwide fight against systemic injustice. We will gather and share this worldwide action through all the media tools and networks we continue to build through voluntary people power.
We embrace the value derived from face-to-face contact, and understand that no single gathering can be representative of our entire movement. We recognize that attending in person will be challenging, or impossible for many, so we also commit to pursuing an online component through which anyone can participate via the Internet. We encourage the creation of local, national and global processes by which movement resources could be directed towards funding travel for active movement participants that otherwise would not be able to attend.
Occupy National Gathering 2013, Kalamazoo, Michigan Proposal of Endorsement
Posted March 12th, 2013 by jackiews • permalink
Proposal – Occupy National Gathering 2013, Kalamazoo, Michigan
Occupy Kalamazoo has received an endorsement from Occupy Raleigh on the following proposal, and seeks general ratification from Occupy assemblies, working groups and affinity groups worldwide. We also welcome an endorsement of Solidarity from Peoples’ assemblies in communities local, national and globaal
~~~~~ Proposal ~~~~~
We, the National Gathering Working Group 2013 (NGWG2013), propose a National Gathering of the Occupy Movement, and peoples’ movements worldwide, in Kalamazoo Michigan, to collectively assemble and embrace our different ideologies and perspectives; to find our common visions; to share our strategies and actions; and to leave this gathering with steps we can all take in both agreement and diversity; for ourselves, our communities, our nations, and for all of us all over the world.
We further propose that our convergence begin on Aug. 21 and continue for five days of Community and Movement building exercises including speakers, teach-ins, and
free-flowing open discussion at a location to be determined by the Occupy Kalamazoo General Assembly. We believe it’s time the people of the world spoke to each other about how to make a better world. We ask you to converge with us, to bring your ideas, your struggles, and your voice and come to Kalamazoo!
We already have networks on board with these broad areas of interest and welcome and need your suggestions, participation and contributions:.
1. Fixing Fossil Fuels and Creating an Environmentally Sustainable Future.
2. Economic and Trade Justice, Equal Access and Ending Corporate “Personhood”, Asserting the People’s Sovereignty.
3. Making and Supporting Free, Unfettered Media.
4. Ending War and Our Police State, Building Peace and Cooperation.
5. Renew Kalamazoo and your community. Homeless Bill of Rights.
We also encourage the creation of local, national and global processes to communicate, organize and converge. We are meeting more and more on the internet, on mumble, on conference calls. Global infrastructures are appearing, to bring more people together and able to participate worldwide. We are able as a people to organize worldwide protests and actions. We envision a day of concerted worldwide actions focused on very local issues that expose those local issues as part of the worldwide fight against systemic injustice. We will gather and share this worldwide action through all the media tools and networks we continue to build through voluntary people power.
We embrace the value derived from face-to-face contact, and understand that no single gathering can be representative of our entire movement. We recognize that attending in person will be challenging, or impossible for many, so we also commit to pursuing an online component through which anyone can participate via the Internet. We encourage the creation of local, national and global processes by which movement resources could be directed towards funding travel for active movement participants that otherwise would not be able to attend.
In keeping with principles of the Occupy Movement, the NGWG2013 will continue planning this gathering only if this proposal is ratified by a preponderance of General Assemblies from across the Movement.
We are committed to operating in an open, inclusive, and transparent way. Therefore, most planning will be done via direct democratic conference calls, hubs and collaborative tools through the InterOccupy.net platform. All are welcome to participate. We endeavor to convene an historic gathering that will require a great deal of organization, so we invite participants from all Occupys and friends to join us in the planning and facilitation of this effort.
We invite you come to Kalamazoo Aug. 21 – 25. We ask for your endorsement, and would be honored if you would join us, live, online or in solidarity actions, and become part of this beautiful expression of our collective will!
The National Gathering Working Group 2013
The NGWG2013 is comprised of Occupy Kalamazoo on the ground, and other
Occupiers from across the Globe online, hopefully to soon include you!

There are many pressing issues we face as citizens of this planet, which has been so abused by our species. We are committed to coming together to resist the continued harms that would be foisted upon us by a corporate-military-governmental collusion that usurps our rights to live free from poisons, industrial invasions, job losses, illegal home foreclosures, and other corporate crimes, and to govern our sovereign selves in keeping with our shared principles of justice, equality, peace, respect, inclusion, the rights of Nature and other species, and the rights of future generations of our own species.
We not only resist what is wrong, we work together to build what is good. All of our work revolves around creating more equitable, more inclusive, more participatory, more sensible (from an individual as well as a species- and planet-protection standpoint) governing systems.
At this time the threats to these principles are converging in several areas. We will broadly define five areas in which we will concentrate our collective efforts during this National Gathering; they will be defined more specifically by the participants as we go along in our living Convergence Doc .
1. Fixing Fossil Fuels and Creating an Environmentally Sustainable Future.
We recognize that climate change is the greatest threat we face as a species, and that it is happening Now. Here. Everywhere. At the same time, corporate-state-regulatory- judicial forces are bulldozing broad swaths of private and public lands in the USA and around the globe to frack for methane gas; extract oil from sands and other formations; blast beloved mountains for coal; erect hideous, loud, and dangerous compressor stations; store and transport liquid gases; force upon communities thousands of miles of dangerous pipelines. They are simultaneously drilling in Arctic and subtropical waters, where entire ecosystems are at risk.
We see a better way. People and groups and communities across the USA are finding ways to conserve energy and switch to renewable forms of energy. As a society, as a species, we could transform the country into 100% renewables within a couple of decades. All it takes is the political will. This group will share methods and firsthand knowledge of small-scale and large-scale transformational success stories from the USA and abroad, and strategize on how to effect rapid policy changes on the local, state, national, and international levels to get us off fossil fuels before they burn us alive. This might sound hyperbolic, but we are witnessing such ever-increasing and ever-intensifying climatic catastrophes as floods, droughts, superstorms, and out-of-control fires, all of which can be linked to human contributions to the greenhouse effect that is largely responsible for climate warming.
This is a vast area in which many of us have focused energies on one or more aspects — e.g., stopping foreclosures, protecting labor, forgiveness of student debt, moving our money from corporate banks to local credit unions, getting out from under crippling interest-gouging credit debt, and, as in #1 above, halting the gargantuan fossil fuel industry before it makes the planet entirely unfit for human and other species to inhabit. And, as in #3 below, stopping corporate media from completely brainwashing the U.S. public by starting independent media entrepreneurships and projects.
Perhaps the most fundamental aspect to focus on in this whole arena would be the elimination of corporate “personhood” and the accompanying control of our governmental functions (executive, legislative, and judicial) that have been ceded to corporations over more than a century of legislative and judicial “sponsorship.”
Although all these things are intertwined, corporate “personhood” is such a big bite to chew on its own that we’ve given it its own section.
As corporations have expanded their capital, holdings, reach, and influence on governments from local to multinational spheres, they have been empowered by lax or corrupt government in the USA’s “law of the land” more than by actual people. They have eliminated jobs nationwide and shipped jobs abroad, where they can more easily exploit workers. We feel siblinghood with these workers and do not wish to cause them job loss. They have been permitted to operate criminally, even rewarded for their malfeasance in the cases of, for example, the massive bank failures that sent the entire global economy into a tailspin five years ago (most countries and most regular people, farmers, and small businesses in the USA have not recovered from this depression, despite “positive economic indicators” we are constantly fed in the media — more on the media below).
Banks operate with impunity, illegally foreclosing on people’s homes–1,478,622 homes were foreclosed in December 2012 alone, according to RealtyTrac, which also points out that “1 in every 810 housing units received a foreclosure filing in December 2012” Banks and corporations are throwing renters out of their homes and seizing their possessions, while bank executives and board members are paid millions per year.
Economic injustice includes systematic subjugation of or discrimination against people because of their race, color, sex, gender, sexual orientation, creed/faith or lack thereof, age, marital status, socioeconomic situation (“class”), neighborhood or locale (urban, suburban, rural, high-rent, low-rent), family makeup or lack thereof, and political beliefs.
Economic justice includes equal access for all to nutritious food, uncontaminated water, clean air, decent housing; high-quality education, healthcare, and fulfilling job opportunities. It also includes trade justice, to assure that trading and trade agreements between nations respect the rights of organized labor and all workers, protect the environment and ecosystems, and prevent abuses by mega corporations that put profits over people. All international trade agreements need to be transparent, accountable, and subject to independent oversight and monitoring. The Trans Pacific Partnership currently being developed is a case in point of negotiating in secret behind closed doors with no meaningful citizen participation or even democratically elected congressional oversight. The agreement is being prepared in the dark by corporate officials and their lobbyists and lawyers, with unelected government bureaucrats. The draft texts have not been released for public scrutiny. We do not want to see our hard fought rights in the USA compromised by trade agreements that drive to the lowest common denominator and allow global labor exploitation, indiscriminate outsourcing of jobs, destruction of the environment, and degradation of global food and water supplies.
Ending Corporate “Personhood.” A number of bills have been introduced in U.S. Congress and in various states to remove corporations’ protection under law as “persons” and to remove money’s “equality” in the law to speech in electoral politics. Those who know about each of the bills can help us all understand what’s supportable in each. And other things along these lines. At present it seems that building legislative and public support to end corporate abuse of power and collusion with government is the best route, but maybe there are other good ideas out there. Let’s get together and figure out where we want to put our efforts.
3. Making and Supporting Free, Unfettered Media. Without independent, non-corporate-fettered journalists and journalistic enterprises speaking, writing, and drawing truth to power, identifying corporate and governmental corruption, collusion, and usurpation of people’s and other species’ and Nature itself’s rights on the local, state, regional, national, and international levels, we cannot win a single battle in the many-faceted “war” we are waging (please forgive the war analogies) to save our present and our future.
It’s an exciting time for media, perhaps the most exciting time in history (the governmental assault of journalists being the exception). But how do we keep the airwaves free? How do we keep the Internet from being taken over by corporate interests? There are many policy questions and practical questions.
4. Ending War and Our Police State, Building Peace and Cooperation. Let’s come together to discuss getting the U.S. military AND all mercenary forces out of Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen, and other regions of the world where they are operating, often without Congressional authorization or public knowledge. And how do we stop attacks by drones that have been taking place around the world in our name. And how do we get NDAA reversed and stop permitting the wanton, capricious, illegal targeting of US citizens and others for surveillance, kidnapping, torture, and murder?
How do we stop the “new slavery” — the outrageously racist incarceration of primarily Black men as a result of the “war on drugs”? As Michelle Alexander, Ohio State University law professor and author of a 2010 book called “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness,” says, “We have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it” by targeting African American men and boys, and even women and girls, in the “war on drugs,” demolishing communities and perpetuating a culture of mass incarceration and racial injustice.
The police state has been very much on the minds of Occupy and other peaceful grassroots protesters. Journalists, professors, whistleblowers, public figures, and ordinary people alike have experienced the cruel hand of state.
5. Renew Kalamazoo and your community. Homeless Bill of Rights.
Project ReNew Kalamazoo is a plan to address some of our gravest community concerns by utilizing alternative energy concepts and methods to address the local social economic, and environmental issues. We can address our social issues in poverty, homelessness, and education, by embracing and empowering alternative energy. Creating horizontal Cooperative business to empower and sustain Community focused goals, programs, and actions.

[edit] National Gathering 2 - @NatGat2
Occupy National Gathering 2013 in Kalamazoo, MI, Aug 21-25. For Personal, Local, National, Global Change
Wiki | Hub on InterOccupy
Please comment!
Draft Itinerary
(See below for goals and logistics)
Total Number of Possible Workshops if two sets run concurrently_____
Possible Workshops ; Day 1. Personal Communication: Opening Meditation, Non-Violent Communication, Mediating Conflict, Facilitating Difficult Meetings, Art, Gandhi’s Vision, etc. Day 2. Turning Words Into Social Action: Talking to Allies (informal discussion with reps from major groups) Forming Affinity Groups, Demo Prep, Big Solutions, Campaign Planning, Campaign Report Backs, InterOccupy Workshop, Alternative Media Day 3. Kalamazoo Day: Pedal Power, Garden Day, A Day Houseless, Bike Gen Theater, Concerts Day 4. Kalamazoo/Pipeline Action. Day 5. Pipeline Action and Closing.
Allies: Unions, Green Party, Socialist Parties, United For Justice w/Peace, Transition Towns....???? Other: tabling, one-on-one conflict mediation,
Lead up: 1. An on-line book group that read stuff specific to each day could really make things go smoother. Ideally, if folks are hired to do some of the workshops (for example http://ccrchicago.org/ and http://www.midwestacademy.com/, Day 1 & 2, respectively) they would choose the readings and lead the groups. And it’s something that would be relatively easy to recruit an on-line activist to lead. 2. On-line sign up for particular workshops--challenge: folks who sign up but don’t show. Solution; phone confirmation.
1. August 21--Be The Change: A Day Devoted to Personal Communication.
AM: get your stuff together and be ready--this is the housekeeping slot. Eat breakfast.
10 AM--12 pm: Opening Session
All Attendee Gathering: Update from Organizers, “This is what you need to know about living here and what’s going to happen this week.” Choose workshop if you haven’t already done so.
Meditation
On-on-ones: “Why are you here?” Everyone should get to speak to everyone. Three minutes then switch. Pass out index cards half way thru, change the question slightly “What do you want to get out of this weekend?” and have folks start writing down answers/GA items. The idea is that after answering either questions several times will help each person clarify for themselves what they really mean. And hopefully everyone will have met everyone, making it easier to get loner’s a buddy/affinity group.
Workshops--Non-Violent Communication, Conflict Mediation, Facilitating Difficult Meetings, Art, etc.
12-1 Lunch
1: 30- 3:30 Workshops
4:00: 6:00 Workshops

Background on Kalamazoo, Logistics, Energy, Housing
Background: Kalamazoo and our state of michigan have some amazing Challenges we are the 6th meanest city in the Nation to the homeless and recently had yet another homeless person freeze to death unnamed and unreported.

Enbridge Pipeline
On 25 , approx 6pm July 2010, an Enbridge Energy pipeline leaked approximately 800,000 gallons of oil into Talmadge Creek that flows into the Kalamazoo river US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) later estimated the spill to be in excess of one million gallons.[10] On 29 July 2010, the Calhoun County Health Department asked 30 to 50 households to evacuate, and twice as many were advised not to drink their water.[11] TheNational Transportation Safety Board stated the Enbridge oil spill the costliest onshore cleanup in U.S. history. every fish in the river within 40 miles died, along with countless other wildlife and environmental costs. several people have died in controversial connections to the oil spill, (financial legal issues often surrounding the controversy of these claims)
