The day started with a cold rain, that eventually tapered off some in the afternoon, before coming back with a vengeful storm in the evening. but, the brief respite from the precipitation was mostly well timed for our loud and joyful casserole march through the streets of downtown chicago.

our march, targeting the devastating problems caused by economic inequality in our communities, was set to kick off at 3:30 pm from the Thompson Center in the loop. activists started arriving as early as 2:30 and by march time we had close to 50 brothers and sisters ready to make some noise for justice. we started by heading east to reach the main shopping areas of our fair city. on the march, we stayed on the sidewalks, banging on our pots and pans, shouting and chanting, accompanied by drums and various noise makers. and of course, police were present. we had an escort of 3-5 bike cops, 4-6 walking officers, and at least 2 squad cars. our casserole march had no real destination, other than the shopping district, so we meandered through streets of downtown chicago, our destination chosen as much at random as it was to make the officers get some exercise. after marching north on state street for a while, we headed over further east on wacker drive to visit the Hyatt Hotel to deliver a message. we attempted to enter the hotel, but security and police prevented us from accessing the lobby. so we delivered a mic check right in front of their doors, highlighting the myriad of labor battles and terrible worker conditions Hyatt engages in, especially calling attention to the political connections of the wealthy Hyatt Heiress Penny Pritzker and Chicago’s 1% mayor Rahm Emmanuel. after that brief stop, we headed north on Michigan, headed for the “magnificent mile”, chicago’s premier high end shopping district. once we crossed the chicago river, our police escort mysteriously disappeared, so naturally we took the streets. On this particularly busy saturday afternoon in downtown chicago, our 50 person #globalNOISE casserole march took over michigan avenue for almost a full mile! traffic slowed as we banged our pots and pans and drums, chanting and inviting others to join. several people walking by cheered us, and some even joined the fun! the march snaked north on michigan ave, switching between north and south bound lanes for fun and excitement. at one point a police cruiser did show up, but with a very weak attempt to restore “order”, we ignored them and stayed in the street. after reaching Water Tower Place, the consumerist palace capping the north end of chicago’s magnificent mile, we decided to enter the building to bring our message to the shoppers. immediately upon entering, banging and klanging our metal pots and pans, the mall security set upon us, telling us we had to leave. we of course ignored them and kept moving up the stairs into the main floor. we made a few circles around the elevators, chanting “while you’re shopping, bombs are dropping!”, and then exited through a Macy’s. once outside, we began circling in the intersection, waiting for all our comrade. then we took a quick consensus and decided to head west for a few blocks and then disband the march, regrouping later to discuss and critique the days actions.

personally, i felt the overall march was a great success. we didn’t know how many participants to expect, or have any real expectations for the route of the march. in the end, a good amount turned out and the fact we were able to take michigan ave for so long unhindered by the police was quite exciting. the final action of entering Water Tower Place was more than i expected, and i hope provided a much needed element of reality to those blindly consuming goods in those halls of capitalism.

Aujourd’hui, 15 Octobre 2012, nous commémorons le 25ème anniversaire
de la mort de Thomas Sankara, qui fut président du Burkina Faso entre
1983 et 1987. Sankara, qui était militaire, arriva au pouvoir par un
coup d’état, mais à la différence d’autres présidents qui arrivèrent
au pouvoir de cette façon, il a toujours su mettre en avant le bien
être du peuple du Burkina Faso. Il nationalisa les terres les
répartissant entre les paysans, nationalisa les minéraux, lança des
campagnes d’immunisation et d’alphabétisation, interdit les excisions
et défendit par tout les moyens possibles les droits et l’égalité pour
la femme …et a affronté la dictature de la dette.

En Juin 1987 il prononça un discours devant d’autres leaders africains
lors de la conférence de l’Union Africaine , dans lequel il appelle au
rejet de la dette, à son non paiement pour avoir été une dette
imposée, injuste et illégitime. Plusieurs mois après, il fut
assassiné.

Aujourd’hui, 25 ans plus tard, son discours demeure d’actualité, non
seulement pour les peuples Africains mais également en Europe, Asie et
Amérique Latine.

Aujourd’hui nous lançons une campagne sur Twitter et d’autres réseaux
sociaux pour revendiquer la figure de Thomas Sankara et le droit des
peuples à dire NON à la dette. Vous trouverez quelques liens à

Estimados amigos y amigas,

Hoy, 15 de octubre, se celebra el 25 aniversario del asesinato de Thomas
Sankara, el que fué presidente de Burkina Faso entre 1983 y 1987. Sankara,
que era militar, llegó al poder a través de un golpe de Estado, pero a
diferencia de otros presidentes que llegaron al poder por los mismos
medios, él puso siempre por delante el bienestar del pueblo de Burkina
Faso. Nacionalizó tierras y las repartió entre los campesinos, estatalizó
los minerales, lanzó campañas de inmunización y alfabetización, prohibió la
ablación y defendió a ultranza los derechos y la igualdad para la mujer …
y se enfrentó a la dictadura de la deuda.

En julio de 1987 pronunció un discurso ante otros líderes africanos en el
marco de la Conferencia de la Unión Africana en el que llamó al repudio de
la deuda, a su no pago por ser una deuda impuesta, injusta e ilegítima.
Pocos meses después fué asesinado.

Hoy, 25 años más tarde, su discurso sigue aún vigente, no sólo para los
pueblos de África, sinó también en Europa, Asia o América Latina.

Hoy lanzamos una campaña en Twitter y otras redes sociales para reivindicar
la figura de Thomas Sankara y el derecho de los pueblos a decri NO a la

Dear friends,

Today, October 15, marks the 25th anniversary of the assassination of
Thomas Sankara, who was president of Burkina Faso between 1983 and
1987. Sankara,
a soldier, arrived to power through a coup, but unlike other presidents who
came to power by the same means, he always prioritized the welfare of the
people of Burkina Faso. He nationalized land and distributed it among the
peasants, nationalized mines, launched immunization and literacy
campaigns, banned ablation and defended by all means equal rights for women
… and confronted the dictatorship of debt.

In July 1987, he made a speech to other African leaders in the framework of
the African Union Conference in which he called for repudiation of debt, he
called for the right to say NO to imposed, unjust and illegitimate debts. A
few months later he was assassinated.

Today, 25 years later, his speech is still valid, more than ever, not only
for the people of Africa, but also in Europe, Asia or Latin America.

Today we are launching a campaign on Twitter and other social networks to
reclaim the figure of Thomas Sankara and the right of peoples to say NO to
debt. Here are a few links to spread today, beginning at 11 am, on social

Hi all: this was a good day in NYC. We had a good turn out considering the short organizing run up from the OWS anniversary on S17 of over 300. We held a debt assembly where the French call was mic checked in French:) We dropped a banner off the Columbus Circle statue reading “Debt is the New Colonialism.” Mic checks at the home of Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein and the elite Plaza Hotel. An OWS banner drop in Rockefeller Plaza and casseroles all over mid-town. There was a great energy and everyone loved the day.

The situation in Mexico is very complicated. The present state of events have gained such intertia that they are spiraling ever further into a vortex of radical change. Over the term of the present government more than 100 million Mexicans have been killed under the pretext of fighting narcotrafficking. It is a dirty war where no such enemy exisists, it is the State that controls narcotafficking, by utilzing the drug war to eliminate competition and in the process annihilate social activists. It is a farce. This year’s elections were a scandalous fraud, no one voted for the candidate “that won,” we do not know any group that would have voted for him, indeed to date, there has been not one public celebration for his “triumph.” Adding to this scenario the present precarious economic situation, the enormous external debt and the imposition of a criminal labor reform law that allows employers to pay 30 euro cents per hour per worker. In the past two years two million children have died from curable illnesses, meanwhile the actual president has given 10 billion dollars to the IMF and bought a new plane. Where are the priorities?

This is only a bit of what is happening, the clear result is that the mobilizations are permanent, their dynamics are completely unpredictable, we have tried stable baseline levels of coordination and organization of all participants who are fighting against tyranny, but as you can assume this is quite difficult.

Yesterday, in a coordinating meeting it was agreed to have a central demonstration against the government in Mexico City, on October 13. Demonstrators are asked to wear black and remain silent. It is necessary for the world to know that on the Day of Global Noise / 13O, a collective beating of the pots, in eighty cities throughout Mexico, as it will be a stark contrast of a powerful silence in action. It is hoped that a million people will participate in Mexico City.

Quando una vera azione globale che accada in tutto il mondo contemporaneamente?

La stessa cacerolada può sembrare un’azione poco interessante, sarebbe molto più interessante un black out mondiale, una sorta di protesta online o hacker o un boicottaggio che possono incidere direttamente sul capitalismo selvaggio. La cacerolada NON è un’imposizione, ma solo un esempio, un’idea delle molte cose che si potrebbero fare, l’importante è che cominciamo a pensare insieme e pianificare e concordare un’azione, qualsiasi azione, come la cacerolada, , o un flashmob, o correre tutti nudi in mezzo alla strada! E magari, # globalNOISE potrebbe essere un modo semplice per creare e migliorare un sistema di coordinamento e di comunicazione che saranno necessari per le azioni future. Inoltre, un’azione globale come una cacerolada potrebbe essere un passo fondamentale per creare la consapevolezza globale per far si che la gente si renda conto che c’è un movimento globale che condivide interessi comuni e che combatterà la truffa del sistema capitalista.

Proponiamo in linea di massima il 13 Ottobre come data per l’azione perché sappiamo che si sta pensando di fare qualcosa a livello globale per tali date.

#globalNOISE: It was first proposed by spanish #15M activists on http://potbanging.blogspot.com.es/2012/06/globalnoise-action.html and is now supported by several people & groups from the whole globe, for example from Interoccupy.org, Canada, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Germany, Netherlands, Russia, Slovenia, Sudan, South Korea. Its main goal is to create a feeling of solidarity between all the global movements (ie. #occupy #15m #yosoy132 #casseroles #G20 #Arabspring #russianrevolution #Sudanrevolts #greece #manifencours). We think this can be achieved by doing the same thing on the same day all over the world – making a lot of noise! For example by potbanging, music, shouting, singing, … (It doesn’t have to be limited to 1 day – imagine we make noise on lots of different protests all over the world, united as #globalNOISE.)


Right now we collect feedback from worlds’ assemblies and groups and try to spread the word about the proposal.
