For two years, students, alumni and community members have been organizing
to raise public awareness about Cooper Union, a historically tuition-free
institution that is currently at risk of beginning tuition-based programs.
A Day of Action will take place outside the Cooper Union and will include
performances, speak outs, and free classes to continue bringing attention

Drowning in Debt: An Organizing Challenge

Organizing against debt bondage is the struggle of our times: 76% of American families are serious debtors, one in seven is being pursued by debt collectors, and taking on debt has become a condition of entry into middle-class jobs. Debt is quite literally, the wages of the future.

Is it possible to form a “union” of debtors, capable of delivering debt relief and transforming the predatory debt economy? Speakers – members of the Strike Debt Assembly that emerged out of an Occupy coalition — will explore this possibility along with the strategies needed to realize it.
