This week, we have seen Occupy and the whole InterOccupy network step up and respond to the situation on the East Coast. Here is a note we received from an Occuiper at Occupy Phillyxn--

For the past year Occupy has played a part alongside movements in Egypt , Spain, Greece and Canada, among a host of others, in shifting the global conversation from profit to people, consumerism to community response, and piety to protest. But where is Occupy now? If you want to know the state of the Occupy Movement you need only look to the Hurricane-ravaged East Coast. The networks that have been forged in the fires of civil disobedience for the past thirteen months have built bonds strong enough to weather storms and respond in kind.

When the Movement began we were both blessed and cursed by our geographical proximity to each other. We could see on the news how many of us there were across the country, but we were so spread out. However, we knew we had to come together. So from Philadelphia to Los Angeles to Kalamazoo to Wall Street itself, Occupiers started meeting, planning, and coordinating on a regional, national, and international scale on conference calls. Thanks to InterOccupy we were able to coordinate across traditionally debilitating distances. We planned national and global days of action, port shutdowns, regional and national gatherings. But to what end? What change did we affect? We created a community bound together by love, justice, and equality that is agile and determined. So, when disaster strikes who ya gonna call? Those Occupy kids.

This time help came not in the form of protests but food distribution, shelter organizing, clothing, blankets, and most importantlyxn-- community. We utilized the network we had built had to respond where the government and the corporation did not. The news cycle is spinning with articles about Occupy Wall Street out performing the Red Cross and FEMA. I will not offer an opinion, but I will say this: when the community needed help Occupy turned on the light switch and got to work. There are now community organizations working with Occupy groups all over New York and New Jersey to help coordinate the recovery effort. At last count there were 11 hubs around the city. This would not have been possible 14 months ago, but our work was not in
vain. We have built an agile, creative, and passionate network of people who can respond when the people come a-callin’.

Turns out we were right. It is better to live in a sustainable communal setting than in a dog-eat-dog capitalist society. Occupy Sandy is the product of 13 months of hard work. It paid off. As a result of your work, people in New York and New Jersey have food, water, blankets to keep them warm, and a community to keep their spirits up. That’s the Occupy way: love and community for everybody. Look out President Obama; Occupy Sandy may have just won the election.
