Call to participate

Oct. 28-Nov. 3 AfGJ is calling for a Global Justice Week and “Tear Down the Walls” National Gathering. We now have over 65 fiscally sponsored projects ranging from International, US national, and local projects spanning the range of anti-war/imperialism and solidarity, economic and racial/ethnic/diversity justice, and humanitarian aid projects. We’re inviting all our fiscally sponsored projects to be involved from the ground floor on planning the week of events. From that core we are opening it up to the greater movement to come and participate. It is part of our service to these projects and the movement.

There aren’t a lot of details at this point because it is our intention that the groups involved collectively create the event(s), so we don’t want to impose too much structure on it before everyone gets a chance to give input. Our starting concept is that Oct. 28-Oct. 31 would be nationally coordinated local actions targeting a particular “tear down the walls” issue each day. Possible targets could be Wall Street, the Israeli Apartheid Wall, the Mexican border wall, prison walls, the walls of oppression such as patriarchy, racism, homophobia, etc. There are obviously more “walls” to tear down than we have days to do them so much will depend on which groups are willing to take leadership.

Nov. 1-3 will be a Tear Down the Walls National Gathering in Tucson, AZ. We suggest a social forum-style gathering and expect hundreds to thousands of participants. We anticipate plenaries, concerts, workshops, and actions, potentially with different “tracks” that people can follow if they want.

We have gotten enthusiastic responses from the fiscally sponsored groups we have contacted so far. If you see this Global Justice Week and National Gathering as being useful to project and expand your work then please help us make it awesome. We see it as a sort of Occupy Movement meets the Latin America Solidarity Movement, meets the anti-war/imperialism movement, meets the immigrant rights movement, meets the prison/police brutality movement, etc. There is much potential for cross fertilization and new collaborations to form.

Is this of interest? If so, how do you think you’d like to be involved?
